With just two seasons left, Game of Thrones fans are already dreading 2018 when the series officially comes to an end, but it seems that HBO doesn’t want it to end either and may well be bringing us more from the fantasy world.
With so many characters and such a rich history, there are certainly places they could go to continue on the world of Game of Thrones – something which die hard fans are keen for.
When talking to The Hollywood Reporter, HBO Programming President Casey Bloys said that the network is definitely interested in continuing the saga: “There are so many properties and areas to go to. For us, it’s about finding the right take with the right writer.”
We would hope that the current writers, David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, would be happy to stay involved, however they have admitted that they aren’t interested in working on any spin-off series that may be in the pipework.
After the Emmy Awards, Benioff said: “I’m sure there will be other series set in Westeros, but for us this is it.”
However, despite the fact the two writers who brought the world of Game of Thrones to our screens are adamant they’re done with all things Westeros, Bloys thinks that there is a possibility they will be involved.
“You’re getting them right when they’re about to embark on production. It’s a big, big commitment for them, not just their creative force, but also their family life. They’re gone for months at a time. So it’s a big, big thing. But should we find a property that makes sense as a spinoff or a prequel—whatever you want to say—I would not expect them to do it, because they’re going to need to decompress for a good amount of time, but it would certainly be nice to have their involvement in some way.”
It seems almost certain that Game of Thrones won’t be completely leaving our lives, however where the writers will take us is anyone’s guess.
Bloys himself has said that there are no plans made yet – “there are things that sound interesting, but at this point, we have no writers assigned or anything like that. In a perfect world, Game of Thrones would keep going, and we wouldn’t have to deal with any of this!”
As much as we wish Game of Thrones would never end, the idea of a prequel has certainly got people excited. Maybe we could learn more about the Mad King or young Ned Stark?
Whatever happens, we’ll be waiting with bated breath and we’re sure we’ll love it, whatever they decide.
