Guardians of the Galaxy director and writer James Gunn is gearing up for the the start of the press tour to promote Vol. 2, premiering on May 5. But, before all of the hustle and bustle, he turned to his Facebook page last night (April 17) to announce he’ll be returning for the third installment — yet to be written.
His note to fans goes into great detail, explaining his thought process before deciding to continue on with the story. If you’d like to read it in full, you can go here, but the gist of it is: during the press tour, Gunn expects journalists to ask him if he will be writing and directing Vol. 3, and after “months of rumination,” his answer is: “Yes, I’m returning to write and direct Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3. In the end, my love for Rocket, Groot, Gamora, Star-Lord, Yondu, Mantis, Drax, and Nebula – and some of the other forthcoming heroes – goes deeper than you guys can possibly imagine, and I feel they have more adventures to go on and things to learn about themselves and the wonderful and sometimes terrifying universe we all inhabit.”
As if that wasn’t exciting enough, this announcement was released right before last night’s advance screening of Vol. 2. And, the reviews are in.
So, what did the critics think?
Erik David, managing editor of Fandago, poured on praise:
GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY VOL. 2 is exciting, funny, gorgeous & a helluva tearjerker. For many, it will become their new favorite Marvel movie pic.twitter.com/Po4ZOSPs8Q

Cinemablend’s Eric Eisenberg had a blast:

Anjie J. Han, Mashable’s movie reporter, is all about it:
I say without hyperbole: #GotGVol2 is MCU at its very best. Grand adventure with intimate stakes. Uses every damn color in the crayon box.

The Hollywood Reporter’s Aaron Couch reacted to other audience members’ reactions:
Don’t think I’ve heard so much laughter at a press screening. People seemed to really be digging Guardians Vol. 2. Can’t say more (yet)

Dan Casey, Nerdist senior editor, had a perma-smile through the film:
Holy smokes was Guardians of the Galaxy, Vol 2 fun! I had a smile plastered on my face nearly the whole time. Tons of Easter eggs too. pic.twitter.com/558Q7nw8yN

That’s just a sampling of responses, but these critics packed a lot of enthusiasm into the limited space of a tweet.
If that wasn’t enough buzz for one evening, some cast members, including Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Michael Rooker and Kurt Russell, swung by Jimmy Kimmel Live last night to preview a clip and share family members’ responses to their being superheroes.
The clip starts with Drax (Bautista) jumping into the mouth of a “giant sea monkey” to attack him from the inside. The Star-Lord (Pratt) and Gamora (Saldana) weren’t quite on board with this plan… Post clip, we switch gears and meet up with the GotG stars on the late night show, which is super cute with Pratt and Saldana explaining how their kiddies think they’re actually superheroes. Saldana reveals how she’ll sometimes call the Hulk to get her children to eat their veggies:
Are your expectations running high right about now?
