Selena Mooney (aka Missy Suicide) and Sean Suhl (aka, less creatively, Sean) began SuicideGirls pretty much only to “see hot punk rock girls nude.” They needed to celebrate girls with girls and tats that did not quite fit in with the Britney Spears controlled vibe at the time.

SuicideGirls’s about page reads: “What a number of people believe makes us unusual, or unusual, or fucked up, we believe is what makes us wonderful – this is our notion of attractiveness redefined.” This is the creed that gave a voice to the marginalized girls who nevertheless needed express their attractiveness and to be versions.

In an age where there was not a leading community for every subculture on the web, SuicideGirls gave these women a location to be themselves. In an interview with Nerdreactor, Selena said she needed to feature “the women who I believed were the most wonderful; girls that lived by their own rules.

She also told Nerdreator: “We needed to give the girls that were featured in the photographs a location where they are able to express themselves in their words in addition to through their pictures.” SuicideGirls’s web site has an effective community that preserves respect for the women and the assignment of the site.

They have adapted their existence on it to reveal the changes as SuicideGirls has grown up with the net. They follow societal media expert Gary Varynerchuk’s guidance about tailoring the format of their content to each unique social media outlet.
