J.K. Rowling Confirms ‘Fantastic Beasts’ Will Span FIVE Movies

Yep, you read that right. We already knew there was at least one more film in the Fantastic Beasts franchise, with rumors of a third, but now J.K. Rowling has confirmed there’ll be FIVE.

The news came last night (October 13) during a global fan event streamed live from venues in London, Los Angeles, São Paulo, Rome, Mexico and New York City. It was basically Live Aid for Harry Potter fans: a Q&A with the movie’s stars and director in the run-up to its release on November 18.

First up was a brand new glimpse of the movie, showing us more of what happens when Newt Scamander (Eddie Redmayne) turns up in New York City in 1926 clutching a suspicious leather briefcase:

Whoa! This hints at a much bigger role for Grindelwald than we expected. And did you spot that mention of Dumbledore?

Then stars Eddie Redmayne, Katherine Waterston, Alison Sudol, Dan Fogler, and director David Yates were introduced in London, while Colin Farrell and Jon Voight beamed in from what looked like a small cupboard in L.A.

The biggest cheer by far, however, was reserved for J.K. Rowling herself. Watch as a very excitable Eddie introduces her with an anecdote about her visits to set:

We just love how cooly she dropped that bombshell: “We always knew it was going to be more than one movie, and we said a trilogy as a placeholder. But I’ve done the plotting properly and I’m pretty sure it’s going to be five movies.”

“Pretty sure”. In other words, cue a meltdown of international proportions, and sure enough, the fans in each venue obliged.

Not only that, but Yates confirmed the magic won’t just extend to New York City and America. The next film in the pentalogy (yep, that’s the word for a “trilogy” of five parts, word fans) will see Newt Scamander visit another of the world’s major capital cities.

Where they’ll go is anyone’s guess, but what does seem certain now is that eventually Newt’s story will catch up with the events outlined in Harry Potter. This was confirmed by Rowling herself as she continued to respond to fans’ queries last night on Twitter:

Five. Movies. And. They’re. All. Prequels.

Are you excited?
