Following the reboot of Will and Grace and Roseanne, another beloved sitcom could soon be returning to our screens. Paul Reiser and Helen Hunt are reportedly in talks to reprise their classic roles as a couple of married New Yorkers in Mad About You.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Reiser and Hunt have had “informal” talks about starring as married couple Paul and Jamie Buchman in a revival series which would begin as their daughter Mabel, now 17, accepts a college offer.
At this stage, fans should feel cautiously excited. Neither actor has signed any kind of deal yet according to the report, and no network is on board either.
However, Reiser — who co-created the show with Danny Jacobson — spoke encouragingly about a revival back in October, having previously been dismissive of the idea.
“Now, because everybody’s talking about it, I started to think, ‘Maybe if there’s a story we could come up with,’” Reiser told People. “To me, it’s interesting when I see my kids are growing and leaving the house. It’s like, ‘Oh.’ It’s like that moment when you get married. It’s like we’re in a new world that we don’t know the rules of.”
Mad About You originally ran on NBC for seven years between 1992 and 1999. For her performance as Jamie Buchman, Hunt was nominated for an Emmy Award for lead actress in a comedy seven years in a row, winning in the last four years. Reiser also received multiple Emmy nominations for his performance as husband Paul.
Will & Grace returned to NBC last fall after an 11-year hiatus, while Roseanne resumes on ABC in March after nearly 20 years off screen.
It has recently been reported that NBC is planning a revival of The Office, too.
Are you mad about a Mad About You revival series? Or is time we left yesterday’s sitcoms in the past?
