You may already know Tom Hardy is an animal lover, having regularly used his celebrity status to bring attention to animal rights. And back in 2015, Vanity Fair highlighted his fandom by putting together a roundup of his dog loving moments.
But, there was one specific dog of late who held his heart — his rescue dog Woody.
So it must have been with an extremely heavy heart that the actor penned a post on his Tumblr page to announce Woody had died. “I don’t normally speak out about family and friends but this is an unusual circumstance,” he writes.
You may feel like you know Woody yourself, having seen him next to Hardy on the BBC’s CBeebie’s Bedtime Story over the holidays. Woody even had a cameo on Hardy’s TV series Peaky Blinders. The golden Labrador made such an impact, he landed on 2016’s Time magazine’s most influential animal list.
And then there was this time when Woody took the spotlight from his movie star bestie:
Aw, we’re sure Tom didn’t mind.
Realizing Woody had become a public figure in his own right, he chose to share the news publicly, explaining, “Woody affected so many people in his own right so with great respect to his autonomy and as a familiar friendly face to many of you, it is with great great sadness a heavy heart that I inform you that after a very hard and short six month battle with an aggressive polymyostisis Woody passed away, two days ago. He was only Age six.”
You can tell Hardy is really feeling the absence, with this passage: “He was far too young to leave us and we at home are devastated by his loss I am ultimately grateful for his loyal companionship and love and it is of some great comfort that he is no longer suffering. Above all I am completely gutted. the world for me was a better place with him in it and by my side.”
But, of course, he is grateful to have had time with his friend, who he found in Atlanta, GA, while filming Lawless, writing, “Thank you Woody for choosing to find us. We will love you and be with you and you with us forever. Never ever forgotten. Your boy, Tom xxx.”
He finished his note, sending good wishes to Woody: “I love you beyond words. To the moon and back again and again to Infinity and beyond. Run with Max [Hardy’s late Staffie-Labrador] now and the Angels. I will see you when I get there.”
Finally, he signed off, with these words: “With all of me, I love you. Always thank you, for your love beautiful boy.”
Hardy shared this video of him and Woody… he really did take him everywhere:
Thank you for sharing, Tom — we’re sorry for your loss, but glad you had the time you did!
