Ewan McGregor is popping up all over the place at the moment: first he was a guest on The Graham Norton Show, and last night (October 17) he swung by Jimmy Kimmel Live!.
There was lots to talk about. First, those rumors about an Obi-Wan Kenobi spin-off movie, then his other passion, motorcycles. Mainly though he was there to promote American Pastoral, his upcoming feature and directorial debut.
Adapted from the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Philip Roth, it tells the story of an American family whose idyllic life in the countryside is shattered by a traumatic event. As well as directing it, Ewan stars as successful businessman Seymour “Swede” Levov, married to Dawn (Jennifer Connelly), whose daughter Merry (Dakota Fanning) disappears after being accused of committing a violent crime.
The tricky bit? The whole thing is set in New Jersey, and Ewan is from a small town in Scotland called Crieff.
He’s impressed us before with his accents, though, right? There was his American accent in Black Hawk Down, then his English vowels as the Jedi master in Star Wars, and soon he’ll be showing off his French accent as Lumiere in Disney’s live-action version of Beauty and the Beast.
To get the New Jersey accent right, however, he had to turn to the voice of a very familiar actor—though his name seems to have temporarily slipped his mind:
So, does he pull it off? We’ll have to wait and see, as he doesn’t say a word in the film’s trailer.
American Pastoral opens in theaters this Friday (October 21).
