Just over two months before the musical sequel hits theaters, the final trailer for Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again has debuted.
It’s an all-singing, all-dancing affair which gives us fresh glimpses of Lily James as the younger version of Meryl Streep‘s character Donna, and the one and only Cher, who looks to be on scene-stealing form as a rather reluctant grandmother.
Check it out below:
While the trailer features all your favorites from the original 2008 Mamma Mia! movie, including Colin Firth, Pierce Brosnan, Julie Walters, Christine Baranski, Dominic Cooper, and Stellan Skarsgård, there’s still something kind of surprising about it. Meryl Streep’s Donna makes a pretty fleetingly appearance in the two-and-a-half minute promo, and never in any of the key ensemble scenes.
Fans have already been speculating that the sequel’s plot may center on the death of Streep’s character, which prompts her family and friends to gather once more on the Greek island of Kalokairi. However, this has yet to be confirmed by writer-director Ol Parker (The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel) or any of the cast.
Asked about this fan theory last month, Lily James remained tight-lipped, telling Radio Times: “I can’t, I don’t want… I just don’t want to ruin it for anyone. The story is so brilliant and people are going to love it so much and I don’t want to spoil anything.”
So, it looks as though we’ll have to wait until July 20, when the film opens, to find out whether the fan theory is correct. But one thing’s for sure: Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again will definitely feature loads of amazing ABBA tunes.
