WATCH: Javier Bardem Is a Terrifying Baddie in ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 5’

By this point we know Javier Bardem does a good villain. He got his big break as the ham-wielding Raul in Jamón Jamón, before going on to play the carefully coiffed hitman in No Country for Old Men, and a peculiarly unhinged nemesis, even by James Bond standards, in Skyfall.

So it was pretty exciting when we heard he’d be playing the baddie in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales, the fifth installment of Disney’s swashbuckling franchise and the latest since 2011’s On Stranger Tides.

He plays Captain Salazar, a powerful and merciless ghost pirate who, having escaped the Devil’s Triangle, has vowed to kill every pirate at sea and take revenge on his old antagonist, Jack Sparrow (Johnny Depp).

Viewers watching the Fear the Walking Dead finale last night (October 2) were the first to see him in action, as the film’s first teaser trailer aired during an ad break.

Here’s Javier:

See? Even an ever-living, vengeful ghost pirate drooling black goo will tell you you don’t get anywhere without saying “please.”

Strangely enough, there’s no sign of Johnny Depp in the trailer, unless you count a drawing of Jack Sparrow on a “wanted” poster. Nor is there any sign of Orlando Bloom, though we know this film sees the long-awaited return of his character Will Turner, last seen getting tangled up with the undead crew of the Flying Dutchman in 2007’s At World’s End.

Also returning is Geoffrey Rush, alongside newcomers Kaya Scodelario (SkinsThe Maze Runner) and Gods of Egypt star Brenton Thwaites, and the not-so-new Sir Paul McCartney, who has a so-far undisclosed role in the movie, proving old rivalries die hard. (The last movie, as we’re sure you remember, featured The Rolling Stones‘ guitarist Keith Richards as Jack Sparrow’s dad.)

Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Men Tell No Tales hits theaters May 26, 2017.
