WATCH: The Second ‘Rogue One’ Trailer Is Here
“Rebellions are built on hope,” says Jyn Erson in the new Rogue One trailer released today (October 13), and if that’s true, then we’ve got our light sabers out and are ready to attack the Death Star right now.
That’s because it looks really, really good. The highly anticipated film provides the link between the events of Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, and the film in which it all began, Episode IV: A New Hope, when Princess Leia (Carrie Fisher) hides plans of the Death Star in R2-D2’s memory banks.
We were introduced to the rebels behind those plans when the first Rogue One trailer dropped in August, but now, thanks to this new trailer, we know a little more about who exactly this team of unlikely heroes are.
Watch it here, then scroll down to see if you spotted everything we did:
Okay, okay. Deep breath. Here’s what we saw:
Mads is a dad
Not only is there Jyn Erso, played by The Theory of Everything‘s Felicity Jones, but there’s also Jyn’s dad Galen (Mads Mikkelsen), who right at the start tells his little girl, “Jyn, whatever I do, I do it to protect you.” (C’mon. Fess up. Who else is singing that Bryan Adams tune right about now?)
Captain Cassian Andor springs Jyn out of jail
Barring the earlier backstory, Jyn starts out the film imprisoned by the Empire, and it’s Diego Luna‘s character who gets her out.
Wait, Mads is a bad dad?
At 00:55 Mads pops up again, this time dressed in what looks like Empire garb. Dads are usually pretty important plot details in Star Wars (ahem), so it looks like we need to keep an eye on his character.
How the title came about
Flying into enemy territory, the rebels are forced to give a call sign: cue Bodhi Rook (Riz Ahmed) making something up on the spot. “It’s, um. Rogue… Rogue One?”
Not everyone uses the Force
“Spiritual warrior-monk” Chirrut Imwe, played by Donnie Yen, can be seen at 01:46 felling a few white stormtroopers with his wooden staff.
That’s all we have on that one. Whoooo! We’re just excited.
And then there’s the biggest daddy of them all. All we saw of him in the last trailer was the back of his head and some heavy breathing, but that was enough to send fans into overdrive. This time, he’s shown briefly at 01:16 talking to the Empire’s Director Orson Krennic (Ben Mendelsohn), and at 02:05 he makes an entrance worthy of X-Factor.
