WATCH: Things Get All Sorts of Scary in ‘The Monster’ Trailer Starring Zoe Kazan

Stranger Things is great and all, but it doesn’t hold a monopoly on the “what’s that unidentifiable creature stalking us” genre.

In Bryan Bertino‘s new film The Monster (the title gets straight to the point) we find a young mom and her daughter in a broken-down car on a remote road. Bertino is definitely on the right track in terms of setting the stage for a horror film. Oh, and we forgot to mention, it’s raining.

And, of course, in the trailer the mom, portrayed by Zoe Kazan, gets down on her hands and knees to look under the car. As viewers it has us yelling at the screen, “Don’t look under the car!!”

In most roadside emergencies, the rule is: stay in the car. But in thrillers like this, there are no set rules. And if there are, the people in trouble tend to do the opposite.

Time creeps by so slow when you’re stuck on the side of the road waiting for assistance. It’s even worse when someone, or something, is creeping on you:

The monster sounds like it’s purring earlier in the trailer. The thought of it possibly being a nice monster is shattered when its arm breaks through the car window to grab Kazan at 1:38. It happens so fast it’s hard to get a good eyeful. Even when pausing the video and going still by still, which we absolutely tried.

The poster’s artwork gives us a little bit of an idea of what to expect:

If you’re interested in seeing some of Bertino’s earlier work, here’s a trailer for 2008’s The Strangers:

The Monster will hit theaters and be available On Demand on November 11.
