Filming on the latest Marvel adaptation, Venom, kicked off just about four months ago, and today (February 8) new footage of Tom Hardy (Taboo) in the title role has been released.
If you’re not familiar with the antihero, Venom first appeared in The Amazing Spider-Man comic books in the 1980s. We also saw the character in the first set of Spider-Man films, with Topher Grace (Interstellar) in the role. In this scene from 2007’s Spider-Man 3, we see that Venom has a chip on his shoulder… and who’s to blame for his troubles? Good ol’ Spidey.
Now, Venom is getting an entire film dedicated to his backstory. In the first trailer, we meet Hardy’s Eddie Brock, as of yet untouched by the venom parasite. Brock narrates the trailer, saying, “Everyone’s got their thing. Maybe it’s a breakup? A death? An accident? Whatever it is… you used to be one thing, and now… you’re something else.”
So, what’s his thing? More specifically, what has landed him in the hospital? Judging by the clip, possibly it is all three traumatic moments listed above.
We fill find out soon enough. In the meantime, he’s definitely hinting that change is coming:
The trailer is a bit of a tease. We don’t see him actually change into Venom. But, that’s OK, it leaves us wanting more. According to Marvel, the venom parasite creates a symbiotic relationship between man and alien, resulting in a gooey being.
In an on-set interview, Hardy gave us his word that he would do everything he can to “deliver the best Venom.” We’re definitely going to hold him to that promise.
In case you missed it, you can take a look at how the original Venom was illustrated over at Marvel.com. We can’t wait to see how they adapt this look for Hardy, although we already have some predictions…
Filming is complete, and we can look for Venom in theaters on October 5, 2018. The Marvel movie also stars Riz Ahmed (The Night Of), Michelle Williams (The Greatest Showman) and Woody Harrelson (Solo: A Star Wars Story).
What do you think? Is Tom Hardy going to out Venom Topher Grace?
